Writers-in-Residence

Each year, with the assistance of Creative New Zealand, the trust selects a resident writer, who is able to live in the house for a period, work in the studio and receive a stipend.

Applications are invited early each year. The Residency is advertised in the media by the New Zealand Society of Authors and on this website.

Facilities

The Michael King Writers’ Centre is based in the historic Signalman’s House on Mt Victoria in Devonport.

The house has panoramic views over the Waitemata Harbour. It is a quiet retreat, but is close to the lively Devonport Village and ferries to Auckland city. It is ideally located for research and writing, and has wheelchair access.

Facilities include accommodation for two writers, a writer’s studio for the resident writer, an administration base, rooms set aside for meetings and events, and a shared kitchen and laundry.

When rooms are not being used by resident writers, they are available to visiting writers for short-term stays.

Visiting writers must be engaged in a writing project or research and must bring their own computer and printer, if required.

We also have facilities for meetings and social events. We can accommodate up to 35 people for social events and up to 20 people for workshops and meetings.
