The Michael King Writers' Centre is the first full writers'  facility and literary centre in New Zealand.

The centre is based in the historic Signalman's House on the slopes of Mt Victoria in Devonport and was established to honour the memory of author and historian Michael King. After his death in 2004, a number of his fellow writers and friends formed a trust with the aim of establishing a centre to assist writers and to promote the literary arts in New Zealand.

Following a major renovation of the historic house, the centre was officially opened in May 2007.

Facilities include accommodation for two writers, a writer's studio, an administration base and meeting rooms.

Devonport is a lively and scenic historic suburb, just a ferry ride away from Auckland city. The Signalman's House is a peaceful retreat with stunning views of the harbour and city.

With the assistance of Creative New Zealand, we are able to offer a stipend for a writer-in-residence, who is funded to live in the house and use the studio. Applications are called for once a year. We also rent accommodation for writers to stay short-term to work on writing projects or carry out research.

We provide resources for writers, host writing groups and master classes, celebrate literary occasions and events, and work to preserve the historic Signalman's House.

North Shore City has an important literary heritage, with many of New Zealand's most significant writers having lived in the area or written about it at some stage in their careers. Today it is home to many of New Zealand's publishing companies.

This is the first writers' centre in New Zealand, and it joins a strong international network of more than 90 writers' centres around the world.

The Michael King Writers' Studio Trust won the2007 New Zealand Trust of the Year award by the NZ Trustees Association.
